As enterprise campuses continue to evolve into smart workplaces, outdoor spaces are becoming just as important as office buildings. Walkways, plazas, parking areas, and campus entrances are no longer simply transit zones,they are valuable touchpoints for safety, communication, environmental monitoring, and employee engagement.
The Advantech Linkou Campus [DE1] serves as both a corporate headquarters and an innovation hub, accommodating employees, customers, partners, and visitors every day. Managing a large outdoor environment requires more than traditional lighting or standalone information displays. The campus needed an integrated outdoor platform capable of providing environmental awareness, intelligent monitoring, public communication, and sustainable operation. [DE1]Style choice, but if we are going to capitalize Campus, we should create a proper noun phrase, being “The Advantech Linkou Campus” instead of using the possessive. Up to you though, they are both perfectly fine.
To address these challenges, Advantech deployed the LUMI Smart Station, transforming the campus into a connected outdoor intelligence network.

Project Requirements
The project aimed to create an intelligent outdoor infrastructure capable of supporting multiple operational needs through a single platform. The objectives included:
- Improve campus safety through Vision AI and smart surveillance
- Monitor environmental conditions in real time
- Deliver campus announcements and digital information
- Build a scalable edge computing infrastructure
- Demonstrate ESG initiatives through renewable energy and environmental transparency
- Provide a flexible platform that can expand with future AIoT applications
Rather than deploying separate devices for lighting, sensing, displays, and surveillance, Advantech sought a unified solution capable of integrating multiple functions into one modular smart station.
Solution
The LUMI Smart Station combines renewable energy, environmental sensing, edge computing, AI vision, digital communication, and intelligent networking into a single outdoor platform. For the Linkou Campus deployment, each LUMI Smart Station includes:
- Wind turbine and solar panels for renewable energy support
- 40-inch full-color ePaper displays for campus information and ESG communication
- IP cameras with Vision AI capabilities
- 7-in-1 environmental sensors monitoring air quality, temperature, humidity, wind speed, rainfall, ambient light, and noise
- Edge gateway for local AI processing and device management
- Battery storage and power management
- Network connectivity through Ethernet and Wi-Fi
Unlike conventional smart poles, LUMI functions as an intelligent outdoor node. When multiple stations are deployed across a community, an area, or a campus, they form a distributed edge intelligence network capable of collecting, processing, and communicating information in real time.
System Architecture
The LUMI Smart Station architecture consists of four integrated layers.
Power Layer
Renewable energy generated by solar panels and wind turbines is managed through battery storage and power management modules, ensuring reliable operation while reducing energy consumption.
Sensing Layer
Environmental sensors continuously monitor air quality, temperature, humidity, ambient light, wind conditions, rainfall, and noise levels. Vision AI cameras provide intelligent video analytics for safety monitoring, people counting, crowd flow analysis, and restricted-area detection.
Edge Intelligence Layer
An Advantech Edge Gateway aggregates sensor data, performs local processing, manages connected devices, and enables real-time decision-making before synchronizing with enterprise systems.

Information is delivered through full-color ePaper displays, LED lighting, and enterprise network connectivity, allowing campus operators to publish announcements, emergency notifications, ESG information, and visitor guidance while enabling centralized remote management.
